National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ)
The industry standard for UK pool lifeguards. Formally the RLSS UK Level 3 Award in Pool Lifeguarding.
- 46 hours over five days.
- In-water rescue, spinal injury handling, casualty management, CPR, AED and first aid.
- Assessed on practical pool, theory, and first aid and CPR.
- Valid for two years.

Candidates need to be 16 and pass a swim test before they start. We’ll send you the full entry standards when you book.
National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC)
For swimming teachers and coaches supervising their own class in water deeper than they can stand in.
- 12 hours over two days.
- Class and pool management, intervention rescue, emergency action, CPR and first aid.
- NRASTC Light available where lifeguards or first aiders are already on hand.
- £150 per person.
Aquatic Therapy Pool Rescue Award (ATPRA)
For hydrotherapy and therapy pools. Warm water, users with limited mobility, hoists and pool pods, and often one or two staff on shift.
- Rescue technique adapted for therapy pools.
- Casualty care, safety management and first aid.
- Right for care homes, special schools, physio clinics and rehab units.
- £150 per person.
General first aid doesn’t cover getting someone out of the water. This does.
Swimming Pool Emergency Response Training
Not everyone poolside needs to be a lifeguard. Everyone poolside should know what to do when something goes wrong.
- Two days, theory and practical.
- Rescue, CPR and casualty recovery.
- Leads to the Swimming Pool Emergency Rescue Award.
- Doesn’t replace a lifeguard qualification, and we won’t pretend it does.
Most Sites Need More Than One
A leisure centre might need NPLQ for the lifeguards and NRASTC for the teachers. A hotel might need emergency response cover for reception and spa staff. A care home with a hydrotherapy pool needs ATPRA and nothing else.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pool Courses in Blackburn
Who are these courses for? Anyone responsible for pool users. Leisure centre teams, hotel and spa staff, swimming teachers, school pool staff, gym teams and care settings with hydrotherapy pools.
Where do you run the training? We provide on-site training throughout Blackburn and Lancashire, right at your pool. Your team trains in the water they actually work in.
How much do pool courses cost? The NPLQ is £260 per person. NRASTC and ATPRA are £150 per person. Group and on-site training is quoted to your numbers, so call 07784 118076.
How long is the NPLQ valid for? Two years. To renew, each lifeguard also needs 20 hours of CPD completed within those two years, with at least four hours each of in-water rescue, CPR, first aid and lifeguard theory.
Is the 10:20 scanning rule still used? No. It was removed from HSG179 in 2018 and replaced with Natural Scan: 20. Lifeguards continuously scan their zone and must be able to reach any point in it within 20 seconds.
Do our swimming teachers need a lifeguard qualification? Usually not. Teachers working in water deeper than their standing height normally need NRASTC, or NRASTC Light if lifeguards or first aiders are already there to respond.

Is there a certificate at the end? Yes. Every course leads to a recognised RLSS award, and we’ll confirm which one before you book.

The one that catches people out is NRASTC against NRASTC Light. If your teachers work in water deeper than they can stand in and there’s no lifeguard on hand, they need the full award. If cover is already there, the Light version is enough.

Two Things Blackburn Pool Operators Get Caught Out By
The 10:20 rule is gone. It was removed from HSG179 back in 2018 and replaced with Natural Scan: 20. Your lifeguards continuously scan their zone, and must be able to reach any point in it within 20 seconds. We still meet operators working from training packs that say 10:20. If yours do, they’re out of date.
Renewals need more than most teams think. An NPLQ lasts two years. To renew, each lifeguard needs 20 hours of continuing professional development within those two years, including at least four hours each of in-water rescue, CPR, first aid and lifeguard theory. That’s about an hour a month. Teams who do the odd refresher come up short and end up paying for full requalification. We run ongoing training to keep your hours topped up.
